Question: How did Murphy's become a Patriots Bar?
Answer: Charlie Wallace
Back in '94, in keeping with the times Murphy's decided it was high time to designate their bar the home of an NFL team. In fair nature, they set out a ballot box for all patrons to determine whom they thought best represented the Irish establishment.
Enter Charlie Wallace: A Murphy's regular, Massachusetts native, and lifelong Patriots fan. Charlie was a true fan. He was there when the New England Patriots played at Fenway, Harvard, and BC; and was a season ticket holder when Schaefer Stadium opened in 1971. And if he had his druthers, there was no way Murphy's would be anything but a Patriots bar.
Suffice to say, many turned a blind eye to the amiable fellow's repeated stuffing of the ballot box. And when Charlie overheard team names like the Bills or the Steelers being cavalierly tossed around...well, that only encouraged him to vote for his favorite team...again. The rest, as we say, is history.
"The Patriots never make it easy on us" - Charlie Wallace (RIP)
Pub Set Up:
The Pub plays only Pats games, so there is no need to crowd in front of one little T.V. Games are upstairs.Doors typically open about two hours prior to game time. Get there early if you want good seats. It is first come first serve and the seats go early. Please note the signs in the different sections of the bar. Below you will find a description of what you can expect from each area.
The End Zone:
This is the far end of the bar near the windows where us rowdies hang out! Don't get us wrong, we're a very friendly bunch, but we don't sit for long. We like to chant and shout (yes, we know it's T.V. and they can't hear us, but no harm in trying), and occasionally, during intense moments, a little 4 letter word may slip :O Yes, it's true, as shocking as it may sound and as appalling as it might be, now and then a little curse may be emitted. This is not the place to sit with kids or a mild mannered girlfriend/boyfriend. Instead, you may want to check out the Fifty Yard Line.
The Fifty Yard Line:
These are by many standards the best seats in the house (if you like to sit:) Inhabited by a crowd that is typically much more mild mannered than the End Zone crowd, these tables are situated snugly around a fireplace in front of a huge (and I mean movie sized) screen that features the best sound and picture available. Of course, like all good seats, these seats are hard to come by, and the best table (directly in front of the screen) is reserved (by common law) for regulars who have been attending Murphy's since Charlie Wallace claimed it for his brethren. It is first come first serve but please be aware of this fact and respect it. These guys are deeply superstitious, down to the very chairs they sit in, and you know, they might be right. Do you really want to risk it? ;) To get the remaining tables in this area, come early so you do not get stuck in the Cheap Seats:P
The Cheap Seats:
These are in the very back part of the bar. They're actually not bad by crowded sports bars standards, but the TV is much smaller and it's away from all the action. However, if you just want a quiet corner to hole up in and comfortably watch the game, this might be the place for you. These little tables are by the fireplace as well.
